Freestanding EDs (FSEDs) are facilities that are physically separate from inpatient services. FSEDs can be categorized as either satellite or autonomous.
Satellite FSEDs are affiliated with and operated by a parent hospital.
Autonomous FSEDs operate independently of hospital affiliation.
